adventures with falsies!

I've been contemplating makeup possibilities for the concert. I mean, when I "dress up" I really like to coordinate things. Oh who am I kidding... you all know me well enough that I LOVE to coordinate even when I'm not dressing up. But special occasions (especially ones so far in advance) allow me the opportunity to experiment and play. Mostly I've been playing with grays with hints of black. But it just hasn't seemed...sharp enough for a heavy metal concert. Even the smokey look seems a bit too tame (if you can believe that). So I decided to throw my inhibition to the wind and experiment with dark, heavy grays and black liner. Also, since dark colors on my lids tend to mask the fact that I actually do have eyelashes, I am going to try out some falsies. Heh.

Tonight I came up with this kind of on a whim. It looks okay, I guess. Definitely closer to what I'm aiming for.

I really dig the false eyelashes. I didn't actually apply them with glue yet, but they fit my eyes perfectly and didn't feel strange at all. If these work out, I think I might try some with glitter.

Tomorrow I am going to try this look:

I really like how she went "outside the box" and put dark in the corners of her eyes and left the middle of her lid neutral. We'll see how I do.

(And just so I don't look like a thief, I found the tutorial here. She is speaking German, though. Too bad I didn't, you know, learn more German while I was living in Germany for 11 years. Oh the shame!)

a new blog

Okay, so I've been posting a lot of pictures of my eyeshadow lately, as I've done in the past. I promise, I am not in love with myself. :-P I am not really an artistic person, per se -- meaning I don't paint, sculpt, draw, etc etc -- but I'm finding the "canvas" of my eyes more and more appealing. I enjoy sharing my work and believe me when I say I have a LOT of photos that I haven't posted on my blog because I didn't want to clog it up with pictures of my eyes. After all, this blog is supposed to be about my struggles with infertility and bipolar disorder. Coupled with other ramblings as they strike. Seeing as how Blogger doesn't offer a 'cut' feature like LiveJournal, I have decided to start a blog dedicated to my adventures in makeup. If you're interested you can follow the new blog at Eye ♥ Color.

P.S. While I don't post the pics of my eyes as a way to "fish" for comments, I do rather enjoy when people comment. It is a major ego boost and who doesn't love that?? ;-P

more fun with color

I almost forgot how much I enjoy matching my eyeshadow to my clothes. Sometimes it's a challenge; sometimes not. Regardless -- it's always fun!

Today I did a soft pink and purple look inspired by this video.

Colors Used:

  • Urban Decay Cherry (soft shell pink with silver glitter): all over lid, slightly dampened for a richer color

  • Urban Decay Matte Trio in Haze; lightest shade (matte purple trio): brow bone highlighter

  • Urban Decay Flash (bright iridescent purple): outer corner of lid, blended into crease about halfway

  • Urban Decay Mayhem (dark blue-purple): liner for lower lashline, used wet with homemade mixing medium.

  • Urban Decay Perversion (matte black): liner for upper lashline, only outer half of lid

The Results:

Don't mind the hair in the last photo. I didn't do anything with it today and it is still wet in the photo. :-P Tomorrow I think I am going to try this bold and daring look! We'll see how that goes.

smokey green eyes

After spending the last month wearing nothing but neutral colors, I decided to bust into my new palette with a nice green look today. I watched this tutorial first and then basically did my own interpretation of Smokey Green Eyes.

Colors used:

  • Urban Decay Absinthe (bright green with gold shift): inner corner of upper lid, blended into crease

  • Urban Decay Perversion (matte black): outer corner, blended into the Absinthe

  • Urban Decay Polyester Bride (shimmery white with subtle gold glitter): brow bone highlighter

  • Urban Decay Vert (vibrant jade green): wet on inner corner of lower lashline

  • Urban Decay Protest (dark forest green): over top of M·A·C Shadestick in Sharkskin on outer corner of lower lashline

wooooo to the hooooo!

My palette arrived today! I am really excited and SO eager to try it out! Honestly the picture doesn't do it justice. It's a very big palette; much bigger than all the others I already have. And the colors are just...wow. I'm even more eager to try out Absinthe and Mayhem now. Bring on St. Patty's Day eyes! Scandal is also very gorgeous and even Roach is pretty despite of the name. Later I think I'll do color swatches on my arm. Now I am going to surf YouTube in search of some looks to try out. Yay!

so it goes

So far 2009 has been okay. Tolerable at least. The Monkey is employed and that is definitely a good start. However I have vowed to make this my year to get healthy and have not gotten off my lazy ass to do a single thing. But at least I have a plan in the works. The friend at Verizon (henceforth referred to as Banana) has become a bit of an exercise nut over the past year and a half. She walks somewhere between six and 10 miles a night. I would love to walk with her but she lives 30 miles from us so she's not exactly an 'ideal' walking buddy. But she does work here in town and offered to walk with me on her lunch break for at least a half hour, Monday through Friday. I agreed. While it may seem like these are plans that are easily broken I can assure you that they are most definitely not. She simply won't let me off the hook and for some reason I feel obligated to sort of prove that I can do it. I'm not going to lie -- I don't like to exercise. I don't enjoy it. I never have. I've tried all sorts of different things from step aerobics to a complex gym regimen involving cardio and weights but never found anything that held my interest. The only reason I ever got down to 145 was thanks to an eating disorder and a very active job at Outdoor Recreation. I hope that once I get started with exercising I will stay motivated to keep going this time around. I am really quite miserable in my own skin but I cannot honestly ever remember a time when I was not miserable in my own skin. Conundrum. Even still, I have to at least try to do something to get this weight off. Maybe having allowed myself to get this far gone if when I get back to a reasonable weight I won't dog myself out so damned much. (Not likely but miracles can happen, right?)

In an attempt to make myself more receptive towards a year of change I decided to color my hair. It's very close (if not identical) to my natural hair color. I joked with my BFF and told her I dyed it and that I am an 'unnaturally natural brunette' now. I didn't take pictures today but I'll definitely get a couple tomorrow and post them. It'll definitely be easier to maintain than the reds I've been wearing for the past several years which will make it easier to grow my hair long again as I won't have to color it every few months to disguise my roots. I was looking through some old pictures of my hair and came across the pictures of when my hair was nearly to my waist. It almost made me want to cry! But it's just hair and it grows back (thankfully pretty quickly in my case). I'm sure once it is long again I'll ache for a short choppy look and wind up whacking it all off on a whim. It never fails. :P But it's change and change is good.

Speaking of change, I've been neglecting my shiny new eyeshadow palette as of late in favor of a more natural, neutral look. I've been experimenting with mostly moderate browns and champagnes instead of spending oodles of time obsessing over expertly matching my eyeshadow to my outfit. Today I used matte purples (Urban Decay Matte Eyeshadow Trio in Haze). It looked pretty but I prefer shiney shadows when it comes to colors like purple. Yesterday I experimented a bit with a look I found on Sephora.com. It was an Urban Decay look called Sharp Smokey Eyes. I've had a hard time "mastering" the smokey look because to pull it off you have to do a fair amount of blending. My sister is awesome when it comes to blending but whenever I blend it seems I don't blend enough (which leaves harsh lines) or over blend (which nearly obliterates the color completely). The Sharp Smokey Eye looked easy enough and, incidently, I had all of the components the look called for. So I gave it whirl.

eXtrEme close-ups:

Not-so-close-up:

It was, by far, the easiest smokey look I have tried to date. The only real problem I had with it was the black eyeliner. Urban Decay makes an awesome eyeliner pencil. It is remarkably creamy and very pigmented (like all of their products) so a little goes a long way. But try as I may to get a nice, thin line around my lashes I just couldn't. So my liner is quite a bit thicker than the model's. But for an amateur, I think I did pretty well. I really like the look, and though I don't find it suitable for 'everyday' wear, I will be trying it again next time I get dressed up for a special occasion or a night out.

update, random style

Today I actually decided to get dressed after spending yesterday in my PJs. I needed the relaxing 'I don't give a fuck' day yesterday, though. At any rate, I got showered and dressed today. I had a new t-shirt I wanted to wear. It's black and says 'rockstar' across it and has Mickey Mouse in foiled rainbow colors on the front. So I asked my sister to do my eyes in rainbow colors today. They turned out wicked cute if I do say so myself.

And this is me today...

princess of darkness?

This morning I decided, since I'm wearing gray, that I would do my eyes in black and silver. Instead of doing them like I did last week, I followed a tutorial. They look okay, I guess, but they're a bit dark for my taste. I'd probably wear this look again if I were going out somewhere.

More on life later today. Fshwee!

less reality, more FUN!

Tonight my mood is weird. I can't say it's exactly manic but then again I do want to say manic. Bah! Oh well. Soon these mood swings will cease. For now, it's nice not to be depressed. (Bad for the check book, though. Eek! Can't wait to work on that compulsive/impulsive problem I have in therapy. Aaaanyways...

Here are pics of today's eyes. I wore green so I did my eyes in the light color of the L'Oreal HiP Riotus shadow duo. I did the outer corner in Urban Decay's Mildew. The highlight is Urban Decay's Polyester Bride (shimmery white).

Also, since I'm wearing green and pink, I decided to look for a green and pink tutorial. The results...

I promise I'll post something with substance and coherent thoughts in actual sentences instead of fragments.

my new obsession hobby

Mastering different eyeshadow tutorials is quickly becoming my new hobby; Ulta (and makeup stores everywhere), my new vice.

This one is a shimmery copper with a dark green.
